Spinal Injuries

Spinal injuries are life-changing, and people who have experienced them can often require round-the-clock care. Therefore, it is important for those who have spinal injuries to have access to the right care and resources. Butterflys Care Group is based in Essex and offers a range of services to support those in need of spinal injury care.

Understanding Spinal Injuries

A spinal injury refers to damage to the spinal cord or the vertebrae (bones) of the spinal column. Spinal injuries can result from trauma, such as car accidents, falls or sports injuries. They can also occur due to non-traumatic causes like tumours, infections, or diseases affecting the spinal cord. The effects of a spinal injury can range from mild weakness or numbness to complete paralysis, depending on the extent and location of the damage.

In the United Kingdom, an estimated 50,000 people are living with a spinal cord injury and approximately 2,500 people are newly injured each year. The extent of care which will be required depends on the type of spinal issue sustained and these are usually defined by 4 categories:
  • Cervical Spinal Cord Injury: Injuries to the cervical region of the spine can result in paralysis or weakness in the arms, hands, torso, and legs, depending on the severity and level of the injury. Severe cervical spinal cord injuries can affect breathing and may require ventilatory support.

  • Thoracic Spinal Cord Injury: Injuries to the thoracic region of the spine can cause paralysis or weakness in the torso and legs. However, they typically spare the function of the arms and hands because the nerves controlling these areas originate higher up in the cervical spine.

  • Lumbar Spinal Cord Injury: Injuries to the lumbar region of the spine can result in paralysis or weakness in the legs and may affect bowel and bladder function. However, they generally spare the function of the upper body.

  • Sacral Spinal Cord Injury: Sacral spinal cord injuries involve the sacral region of the spine. Injuries to the sacral spine primarily affect bowel and bladder function, as well as control of the lower limbs.

We offer a variety of flexible and affordable in-home care packages, from 15 minutes a day, to up to 24 hours, all tailored to suit the individual’s needs.

We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to live as independently as possible and that a physical disability shouldn’t hold anyone back from living the life they want to live. Our supported living services for people living in Essex with a spinal condition, help people to achieve this and retain or gain their independence. We like to think of supported living as a middle ground between in-home care and a residential care home.

We have both single-occupancy and shared living accommodation available depending on the personal preferences of every individual.

Butterfly's Care Homes offers personalised respite services for residents and carers in Essex, designed to suit the individual. We work closely with you and your dependent to give you the peace of mind you need to relax and recharge, taking a break from primary care duties for flexible amounts of time. We particularly understand the needs of those who have spinal injuries and other spinal conditions, so you can rest assured knowing expert care services are being provided.
