Cerebral Palsy

Living with cerebral palsy brings many challenges and caring for someone suffering from it requires experience, training and most importantly patience and commitment.

At Butterfly’s we are registered to provide cerebral palsy care and support services across Essex for adults aged 18-65. We can offer a range of services to provide the level of care required to help individuals live full and meaningful lives whilst still receiving the care they need to manage their condition.

What Is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy is the name for a group of lifelong conditions that affect movement and coordination. It is caused by a problem with the brain that develops before, during or soon after birth. The severity of symptoms can range significantly from minor, manageable problems right up to a person being severely disabled.

Signs and Symptoms of Cerebral Palsy?

The symptoms of cerebral palsy are often not present as soon as a baby is born. They normally take time to develop and will become obvious during the first 2-3 years of a child’s life. As children progress into adulthood the condition can affect the body’s ability to move effectively which may make it seem as though the condition is worsening.

Symptoms in Adults Can Include:
  • Muscle weakness in arms or legs

  • Muscle stiffness

  • Loss of muscle tone

  • Paralysis

  • Floppy limbs

  • Scissor-like movements with legs when walking

  • Twitching of the face and tongue

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Involuntary movements in hands, arms and legs

  • Premature ageing

  • More pronounced mental and physical impairments

Typical Care Needs for People With Cerebral Palsy

We are very aware that care needs range hugely from person to person when it comes to cerebral palsy and our carers are fully trained and experienced in meeting the requirements of every single client. From making a cup of tea to helping with eating, drinking and personal hygiene, our carers can do it all.

We will create an individual care plan for each person depending on their needs and preferences to ensure that we are providing the right level of care.
