Diabetes Care Services

Diabetes in the UK is a condition that many people face, with statistics from 2022 showing that there are 4.3 million people living with it. If you or a family member have diabetes alongside another condition, you could benefit from specialist care. Our Essex-based homes in Colchester, Alresford, Braintree and Walton-on-the-Naze could be the perfect place for you or a loved one to receive expert care to help manage the diabetes alongside other mental or physical conditions.

Understanding Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterised by high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps regulate blood sugar levels by allowing cells to take in and use glucose for energy.

There are two main types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. While both types affect blood sugar levels, they have different causes, symptoms, and treatment approaches.

  • Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.

  • Type 2 diabetes develops when the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin or when the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin to meet the body's needs.

How We Can Help

At Butterfly’s, our staff are equipped to support those who have more complex, specific needs. We have a team of “Champions” who are specialists in caring for those with conditions such as diabetes, so rest assured that the highest levels of care are practised in our care homes. We understand that diabetes can be more difficult to manage alongside conditions such as Alzheimer's and dementia, which is why our staff are experienced in the following:

  • Assisting with medical appointments and medical reviews

  • Helping monitor blood sugar levels

  • Creating dietary plans to meet specific dietary requirements

Everyone who receives our care is fully engaged in the processes we follow, meaning they have an input in their meal plans, for example. We believe it is important to use a personalised approach, and those who receive our care are fully engaged in the processes we follow. We offer various types of care, depending on individual needs and preferences. These include:

  • Continuity of care from our local sites, so you will quickly become familiar with your local Butterfly’s carers. We never use agency carers as we know how important it is to see a friendly, familiar face!

  • An online portal to allow families to feel part of their loved one’s care and have access to view care notes.

  • The freedom to talk to us and give us feedback. We value any suggestions that will improve our care packages even further.
