A learning disability can be challenging in many ways for both the person with the condition and their loved ones. Depending on an individual’s personal struggles and care needs, it may mean that living alone or with minimal care is not an option for them.
At Butterfly’s we offer specialised care and supported living services for people with a range of learning disabilities in Essex. Our care plans are unique to the individual so once we have assessed their condition we can cater to their specific needs.
According to the NHS, “a learning disability affects the way a person learns new things throughout their life”. As with any medical condition, be it physical, mental or learning, no two people are the same or will deal with their condition in the same way.
A learning disability is different to a learning difficulty. However, there are some similarities. People with a learning disability may find it difficult to learn new skills, understand complicated information and look after themselves at home. The severity of their disability may require additional care and support.

Often learning disabilities can be managed at home either by carers or family members. In fact, if a person’s symptoms are mild enough, they may be able to live independently. If this is the case, as the carer you may need respite care.
With respite care, a professional carer will help you for as long as you need support.
If your loved one is requiring more support than you are able to provide them with, supported living can be an advantageous solution. However, some cases require living in a full-time care home where support will be provided 24 hours a day.
If you are considering what type of care might be best for either a loved one or for yourself, we can help you make the right decision.
At Butterfly’s we are committed to providing individual care plans to make sure we are providing the right type of care. We strongly believe that every single person has an entirely different set of circumstances from their medical condition to their personality and their family dynamic.
Our professional carers take the time to get to know each client and what they need for their requirements. The supported living service has dedicated supported living accommodation at both Colchester and Braintree. If you would like to know more about a specific site, we are always happy to chat.
